Opening Receptions, Artist’s Talks & Panel Discussions

OPENING RECEPTIONS: Opening receptions are held for each one of our exhibitions in our gallery space. Art Lab usually has 8-10 shows per year and the opening reception is typically the first Saturday of the exhibition.

ARTIST’S TALKS: Occasionally, in combination with an exhibition, an artist will give a talk about their work and take questions. These are usually part of the artist’s proposal to exhibit their work and are advertised with information about the exhibition itself.

PANEL DISCUSSION: Panel discussions are help periodically at the Art Lab and typically involve discussions revolving around some aspect of life in the world of visual arts. Our most recent panel discussion was in conjunction with our UPCLOSE: Snug Harbor exhibition and delved into the “State of the Visual Arts at Snug Harbor.” The moderator was Melanie Cohn, Executive Director of Staten Island Arts (formerly known as COASHI). Panelists included – Ciro Galeno,Gustavo Galvan, Craig Manister, and Ann Marie McDonnell.

PAST PROGRAMS

Cafe Society
Cafe Society was a series of two to three themed panel discussions that typically took place in the Spring in the Art Lab. The last Cafe Society discussions were titled “Art History” moderated by Robert Bunkin and “Why (Some) People Photograph” moderated by AD Coleman.

Artistic Bridges
Artistic Bridges was a grant funded program designed to expose high school students through an enjoyable experience to college via art and art history. The program, in its time, brought over 500 high school students to the Gallery of the College of Staten Island for critical analysis of their current exhibit and the study of its historical significance. Following that study, students visited the Art Lab for a hands-on workshop exploring mediums and techniques discussed at the Gallery at CSI.

Tailored Programs and Special Events

Art Lab hosts special programs in its facility and at off-site locations for focused groups of students. We develop for large populations including in school residencies (we are registered with the New York City Board of Education) and we will do birthday parties in our facility for a small intimate group of 8. No matter the size of the group we will guide and assist you in your art making experience and education. Call us at 718-447-8867 to talk about your specific needs.
Special Events at the Art Lab include our Annual Open House held in September each year, panel discussions and artist’s talks, book signings and launch parties, fundraising events, and our most recent addition to Art Lab programming – Art Lab After Dark. See our Calendar of Events page to see what is coming next.
