This class begins there - meeting you where you are - and invites you to explore the medium more deeply. Together we will explore the rich and surprising history of collage, from early Japanese poetry and paper traditions to the radical experiments of the Dadaists, Avant -Garde artists, punk aesthetics, and contemporary collage practices. These influences are shared as inspiration and context, always brought back to your own creative voice.Students will work with a wide range of materials and formats, including flat collage, books, and small three-dimensional forms. You will learn how texture, color, shape, and pattern can come together to create expressive, meaningful work, and how the art of collage can serve as a powerful tool for storytelling and personal expression. The class also includes playful additions such as basic printmaking, ink drawing with handmade bamboo pens, and creating accordion books designed for collage. Beginners and returning students are welcome. Value relationships, shape relationships, line quality and perspective will be demonstrated and discussed. These fundamental tools of design will strengthen your skills towards creating expansive space demonstrating strong three-dimensional forms in your compositions. Portrait drawing and landscape drawing are also subject options. For those students who are painters, this workshop will inform and strengthen your work.
