Starting from the beginning, students will be shown the proper handling of oil paint, including set-up and clean-up best practices. This class will explore the qualities that make oil painting unique, such as the ability of painting wet on wet, dry- brush, and the importance of the brush stroke; as well as explore various painting styles and techniques, referencing artists, and looking at classical and modern qualities of art. Students will paint from life and imagination, while learning the importance of observation. Students will be taught how to mix color, how to look at proportions and see light and shadow. Students will be shown distinctions specific to oil painting. They will learn how to work in a compositional manner.

This class meets once a week for 8 weeks.

A $20 registration fee will be applied to the total.

Want to oil paint but don’t know how to start? No worries- This class will take you through day one of oil painting, including the set-up, clean-up basics and everything in between.

Designed with  the beginner in mind,  but all are welcome!

 

Supplies List *Please bring with you to class on day one*

Oil Paints, Please be sure not to get student- grade paint, such as Winton, and check that your paint ingredients are pigment and oil only. One recommended brand is Utrecht; you can order online through Utrecht or Blick.

I tube of titanium white/ Utrecht White/ or titanium white and zinc  (150 ml)

1 tube each of cadmium red pure, cadmium yellow pure, ultramarine blue, yellow ochre (37ml)

One Oil Painting Brush round #6 or #8

One cotton, 2 stretched canvasses either 18″ by 24″ or no smaller than “16 on either side, rectangular shape preferred

One smock or old clothes

Optional:

alizarin crimson pure, raw umber, burnt umber, phthalo blue pure (37ml)

a palette knife

Paper towels (cheap ones work better!)

liquid dish soap

A clean rag
