Emphasis on observational drawing will include free-hand drawing from still life setups. Students will learn how to measure by sight and one class will be devoted to the basic principles of perspective. The course will explore drawing materials such as vine charcoal, charcoal pencils and working in pencil on various grades and types of paper. The subject matter will begin with simple set ups, still lifes and will progress to working from live models for the last 3 weeks. Each week, students will be given a mini-assignment in the first half of class that focuses on an element of comic creation. Their colors are lively and bright and very tonal. This class will explore the qualities that make oil painting unique, such as the ability of painting wet on wet, dry- brush, and the importance of the brush stroke; as well as explore various painting styles and techniques, referencing artists, and looking at classical and modern qualities of art. Students will paint from life and imagination, while learning the importance of observation. Students will be taught how to mix color, how to look at proportions, and how to see light and shadow. Students will be shown distinctions specific to oil painting.
